CEP 842: Instruction in Inclusive Classrooms
Instructor: C. Okolo
As CEP 842 was my first course in my concentration area (special education), it was here where I was first introduced to special education law and best practices in inclusive classrooms. An assignment that I found useful in this course required me to create a professional development session for a "group" in my school setting around one of the course themes. I developed a presentation that would familiarize para-educators with assistive technology.

TE 861A: Teaching Science for Understanding
Instructor: S. Tuckey
This course explored how to teach students science for a deep understanding and not simply rote memorization of facts and formulas. Theories and current practices were introduced and we were given the opportunity to apply some of those theories and practices to our own teaching. An assignment that I found valuable required us to watch recordings of a veteran teacher as he implemented lessons where he attempted to teach his students for a deep understanding of the content being taught. My analysis of his teaching is included below.

CEP 841: Classroom Management in Inclusive Classrooms
Instructor: T. Mariage
This course explored how classroom teachers can use Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports to create a classroom and school-wide environment that fosters learning for all students, particularly students with special needs. Another important and influential aspect of this course was that it addressed how teacher's can (and should) create a classroom that is well managed. As an assignment for this course I created a presentation that I would give to a group of my peers at a professional development session.

ED 800: Concepts in Educational Inquiry
Instructor: S. Weiland
ED 800 is the introductory course in the online MAED program. This course reviewed the history of education, both in the U.S. and across the world. Throughout the course we studied the work and beliefs of many whose philosophies have had an impact on education. We also explored the various ways in which one can approach learning. This course tested me greatly! I found the readings and writing assignments to stretch my mind and challenge me academically. My favorite assignment from this course is included below. For this essay we had to view the film, Whale Rider and then write an essay from the point-of-view as someone visiting the village as an outsider, there to learn about their culture.

CEP 840: Teaching Exceptional Youth & Children in General Education
Instructor: C. Okolo
CEP 840 served as an introductory course to the special education concentration in MSU's online MAED program. This course explored a vast array of topics; legal issues and obligations of the general education teacher with special education students, characteristics of students with specific learning and physical disabilities, and methods teachers can use and implement to teach special education students in the general education classroom. As a project for this course I created a wiki on Asperger's Syndrome for general education teachers. Please note that this wiki is not in it's complete form (Wiki, nor I am able to recover it in it's entirety).

CEP 883: Psychology of Classroom Discipline
Instructor: A. Fedewa
CEP 883 looked at how creating and implementing a classroom management plan that motivates students is foundational for creating a classroom environment conducive to learning. We also explored multiple ways in dealing with discipline issues that do inevitably arise. For my course project I choose to consider 5 aspects of my classroom plan.

TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners
Instructor: A. Dodge
This course, designed to meet the state of Michigan's reading course requirement for teacher's seeking their professional teaching certificate, allowed me the opportunity to explore effective reading and comprehension strategies that can be used for students who struggle to read and write. The culminating assignment for this course was the case study presented below in which I examined how direct vocabulary instruction can impact reading comprehension of expository texts.

CEP 820: Teaching K-12 Students Online
Instructor: L. Wolf
CEP 820 addressed how learning is changing and how teachers can effectively plan, create, implement, and assess online learning experiences for students in the K-12 classroom. A MAJOR focus in this class was the creation of our own online unit that we could potentially use in our current teaching situation. The Moodle course below is a unit on elements and the periodic table that I teach to 8th grade science students.

TE 831: Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology
Instructor: A. Horton
In this course we explored the affordances and constraints of using various forms of technology to teach subject matter in the classroom. Throughout the course we were exposed to and required to use many technologies that we could use in our own classrooms. The microscope glog (digital/interactive poster) below was an assignment I completed using Glogster. Included in the glog is also a digital story I was required to complete as a separate assignment for TE 831.
